Brownstown

The Village of Brownstown was laid out by John Brown in 1870, and sprang up along the St. Louis, Vandalia & Terre Haute Railroad. With the railroad, the business community grew. The dairy businesses in the community are associated with an interesting story. During the Great Depression, farm organizations began organizing strikes, withholding production of livestock and produce. A Brownstown dairy business owner had to post a second man in his milk trucks as activists in the area were overtaking his trucks and spilling the milk along the roadside.
