Greenup received its name from National Road surveyor, William C. Greenup, who platted the town in 1834. William C. Greenup was one of the supervisors hired to oversee construction of the National Road in Illinois, surveying the original alignment from Marshall to Vandalia during the 1830s. The town of Greenup served as  the Cumberland County seat from 1843 to 1857.  33 contributing buildings that cover a period from 1872 to 1940 comprise the National Register Downtown Historic District. The architecture represents the transition of a town from mud streets and the days of the horse and wagon to the era of the automobile. Today Greenup is known as the "Village of Porches" due to a community effort that resulted in second-story porches being restored in the downtown district.
