This community was the state’s capitol (1820-1839) after having been moved from the territorial capital of Kaskaskia on the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1819 by the state of Illinois specifically to be the capitol. A young Abraham Lincoln received his credentials to practice law, and gave his first protest against slavery here at the statehouse. He also started his political as a state representative here in 1834.
