Bicentennial Car Tour May 1 7
Illinois will be the starting point for an antique car and truck tour observing the 200th anniversary of when the National Road construction began. The National Road Alliance, comprised of the six National Road states, is coordinating the tour that will begin in Vandalia on May 1 and end in Cumberland, MD, on May 7.
All pre-1985 cars and trucks are welcome to join the Historic National Road Bicentennial Car Tour. Individuals or car clubs are encouraged to participate and may drive just the Illinois leg or any portion of the journey to the east coast.
There is no registration fee and drivers will be given a souvenir button and other commemorative items.
The caravan leaves the National Road Interpretive Center, 106 S. Fifth St., Vandalia, at 11 a.m. May 1. There will be a lunch stop in Effingham and an afternoon stop at the covered bridge in Greenup. The caravan is expected to arrive at the National Road Welcome Center, 603 Locust St. in Marshall, around 3 pm, where a reception is planned.
The caravan will then resume its trek on May 2 from Terre Haute, IN. After Indiana, the tour will continue to Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania before reaching Maryland.
